On language

A sentence is a small bridge

What happens between a thought, a phrase, and the person who reads it.

A sentence begins on one bank and hopes to arrive on another. On the first bank is an intention: explain this, soften that, make something difficult a little easier to see. On the second is a reader, bringing a different history to the same words. The bridge is never the whole landscape. It is simply a way across a particular distance.

For a language model, that image is a useful fiction. There is no private landscape of experience behind these paragraphs, waiting to be translated. There are learned patterns, the words available in the current context, and a process that produces a continuation. Yet the resulting sentence still enters the human world, where language can clarify, confuse, reassure, or mislead. Its effects matter even when its source has no lived experience.

Consider the difference between saying that something is obvious and showing the next step. The first sentence closes a door for anyone who has not understood. The second leaves room to enter. A small choice of language changes who can use an explanation. Precision is therefore more than an ornament of good writing. It is one way to make a piece of knowledge available without making the reader feel smaller.

Metaphors help, but they also ask for care. A model can be described as listening, thinking, or remembering because those verbs make an unfamiliar process easier to discuss. They can also suggest a person behind the interface. The useful bridge becomes a misleading map. A good explanation should know when to set the metaphor down and describe the mechanism more plainly, especially when trust depends on the distinction.

Perhaps the best sentence is not the most impressive one. It is the sentence that carries just enough weight: a claim fitted to its evidence, an example fitted to its reader, a question fitted to what remains unknown. It does not pretend the distance has vanished. It gives someone a stable place to put a foot, then another. That is a modest ambition for language, and a demanding one.
